Picture of the Day

The site is slowly coming along. The quality of the questions has gone up a lot. Every now and again a wave of kids will come through like a tornado and post "your mum" a couple of hundred times, but that's not the end of the world.

I'm quite happy with the picture of the day. I've always loved photoshopped pictures and thought this was a good way to combine that with the site. So thanks to the people who have taken the time to do that.

I was browsing round other Question and Answer sites and it seems most of them have an economic model of some sort. People have a really tough question and they are prepared to pay good money for an answer. Now, I know I've got some really smart people using QS, and there is potential there for them to make some money from their efforts. How about each member can accept paypal donations for their efforts? Or, everyone creates an Amazon wishlist, and when they answer a question there is a small bit of text saying;

"If you liked my answer, then buy me something from my Amazon Wishlist"

Or something like that. Problem with that of course is that Australia and most European countries don't have Amazon, and the shipping fees could be demotivating for the asker. Somewhere along the line I'll need to take a cut for hosting and building the whole thing. But for now I'd rather just keep it simple.

Anyone got any ideas?

The running is going well. I've done two 10 minute runs. The first was a killer, but the second was a lot easier. My next run is tomorrow, and this is going to sound a bit sad, but I'm half looking forward to it.

Keep telling your friends about the site! The stats are down!

Adam

I like the pic of the day addition. I'm just never very clever at responses to them, I hope to come up with one someday.
Honestly I'm a hesitant about the rewarding the anwerer option. Peronally I'd feel like a beggar. "will answer questions for trinkets." I don't want anyone to feel guilty for simply enjoying the answer without paying for it. But perhaps there should be a premium question option. Sometimes people beg for real answers only. Maybe they could paypal the site a couple of monetary units and for that their question will be answered only by someone on The Panel- a large group of users who volunteer and have a proven track record of not responding "Because your mom eats worms." An Ultra-Premium question (a couple quid more) would become a question of the day or a be open for all members of The Panel to answer- multiple answers for multiple bucks. But let the money go to the site. Or a fraction of the money goes to the site and a fraction goes to the answerer's account.
I haven't looked at the other websites, but possibly for people craving truly accurate answers there can be a pay the answerer for the answer option and they get someone to give not only a good answer but a true one.

Adam, you are doing such a great job and I like your site, a lot.

I think if you're going to go for a 'pay for answer' option, then you'll have to come up with a way to have more dialogue. People will want to clarification of a questions and the askers will want more detail in the answers.

I've been through all this at another website and sadly have watched it wither over the last few years. I know there's a couple other people from that website here at Question Swap. (btw, hi LG!!) Maybe they can add a little more insight into the pay for answers thing. Truthfully, right now, the idea makes me cringe. I'm sure that's just the bad taste left in my mouth from that other site.

Whoo, three cheers and a tiger for the bird flu song! Great beaky bagfuls of tender sensitivity. Take that, Chris So-Called Martin.

Payment could definitely change the dynamic of the site, but I think it would also promote a quality increase for answers. Amazon wishlists are a little bit cam-whorish, but I certainly wouldn't complain if someone bought me something.

Honestly, I'd rather have the ability to comment on featured questions. I always waver between a love for the anonymity of this site, and secretly wanting to chat with the people who put out some of the wittier, more wicked responses.

When I post an answer to something, I'm in it for the feedback. I want to please. I want to amuse. Having anonymous feedback would be a lovely ego-stroke.

Lovely bird flu song. Now I hope the disease mutates so it spreads to humans more easily and thus increases interest in your song.
I've been musing about the idea of allowing member feedback on featured questions. On the one hand, I do want to let people who write superb answers know they have my admiration. On the other hand, the current system is working. Feedback can lead to a forum community forming. I've already seen a question written by one person from another answer site badmouthing someone else from that site. I'd hate to see this place sink to that level of personal sniping, clique forming, retaliation, etc.
Personally, when I write an answer I hope it entertains but I don't intend it to be the start of a long dialogue. Feedback would make it such. Feedback may give us a chance to all speak together, but that might be a bad thing. Expressing myself here through questions and answers works so well, I'd hate to see the balance disturbed by creating a forum atmosphere.
